Create a bear to show you care! Join us at Franklin Art Center to create a tangled bear. Zentangle is an art method where 'Simple lines create intricate designs' [The Traveling Tangler Jan 2014]. Certified Zentangle Teacher, Sarah Del Mastro, will introduce you to Zentangle method and guide the class through the steps to create beautiful patterns to decorate your bear (template provided). No experience needed, beginners welcome, all materials for class are included. You will go home with a framed 8" x 10" piece of art and supplies to continue tangling at home, and a portion of the proceeds from the class will provide much needed art supplies to children in need.<br />

One of them is called Glace. It is a tangle created by Rick and Maria in November 2013. It reminded them of ice as it melts and reforms. It reminds me of the roof of a gingerbread house, or in the variation shown here it reminds me of fairy lights when you first open the box and they are all so neatly arranged :) But one of my students contacted me to say she couldn't find it online. There is a Glace tangle that someone has posted, but it doesn't look at all like this! So here's the scoop...there are a few tangles from Rick and Maria that they have shared with CZTs along the way, but for one reason or another never got around to publishing the stepouts, so those few are not available at TanglePatterns.com and generally no stepouts have been posted for them. What seems to have happened with this one is that someone else has created a different tangle independently and named it Glace, so if you google that name it comes up with a completely different tangle! To find more 'hidden' tangles check out <a href="http://tanglepatterns.com/zentangles/list-of-official-tangle-patterns" target="_blank">THIS PAGE</a> on tanglepatterns.com and then ask your local CZT to teach them to you in class. We can take a look at Glace during our 'All Boxed Up' class on Sunday or ask me to teach it whenever we next meet.<br />

Even though my kids are now eighteen and twenty, I still can't help thinking yellow school bus and backpacks and new crayola crayons and pencils! New routines, cooler weather, fall colors, holidays bringing a special focus on sharing with friends and family. In honor of the season, I have been working with Kate Lamontagne at <a href="http://www.kamalaartandsoul.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Kamala Art and Soul</a> and Linda Kabat at <a href="http://www.franklinartcenter.com/" target="_blank">Franklin Art Center</a> to ensure plenty of fun opportunities for you to come play at their studios. In Franklin we are launching a new program called 'Tea and Tangles' in a new time slot for Zentangle on Monday mornings. Yes, while the kids are occupied and entertained and working hard at school, you get to breathe and relax, sip your favorite beverage, and make beautiful art at your local art studio :) How fun is that! </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you need a restful weekend class, then consider 'Traveling with Tangles' and join us for our relaxing Sunday afternoon classes over at Kamala. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Both programs, 'Tea and Tangles' and 'Traveling with Tangles', run twice per month and will include a mix of skills classes and seasonal projects. I am also working with Woodside Montessori School in Millis to see if we can set up a kids afterschool program again this year, probably on Mondays; if anyone has kids that would be interested in weekly afterschool Zentangle program please let me know. </div>

<b>January 11th - New Beginnings</b></div>
<br />
Begin the new year by learning something new (or re-visiting the magic of your first Zentangle tile!). We are kicking off the new year, and our new program at Franklin Art Center, with a workshop that teaches all the basic steps along with the fundamental skills, techniques and philosophy that forms the foundation of the Zentangle method. A great place to start if you are brand new to Zentangle, or if you are self taught with books and online resources. Also a wonderful experience for returning students to get reconnected with the core principles and values of Zentangle, and explore and develop variations of simple beginner tangles.</div>

<b>March 8th - Tangled Garden</b></div>
<br />
With warmer weather in mind, let's encourage spring along by creating a tangled garden in our artwork at this month's workshop. Learn a variety of plant-like tangles and how to layer and merge them to form a tangled garden on a peek-a-boo card. We might even sneak in a shamrock in honor of St Patrick!<br />

<b>April 12th - Great Grids</b></div>
<br />
There are lots of grid based tangles that you can incorporate in your Zentangle practice, and endless variations that you can create for yourself. In this workshop we will learn some classic tangles based on grids of lines, circles and squares and explore the ways in which grids can be used to create 3D effects. And of course mount your work in a peek-a-boo card and decorate with matching tangling. All within the simplicity of the Zentangle approach!</div>

Mid July some tanglers got together at a local beach and had some fun tangling in the sand. You can see the photos and read about how much fun we had <a href="http://zenventure.blogspot.com/2014/07/sand-tangles.html" target="_blank">here</a>, but there was another piece of the story that I couldn't share online until today...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As we began our tangles with a little 'Flux' and 'Printemps' something appeared at the waters edge. At first it was hardly noticed by the passers by... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First one line...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IoJGm-nPfTU/U92ADPjFMkI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/_8du5vnTvRc/s1600/IMG_8451.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IoJGm-nPfTU/U92ADPjFMkI/AAAAAAAAAqQ/_8du5vnTvRc/s1600/IMG_8451.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then two...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Who could it be,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Coming out of the sea,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To surprise you and me,</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oui, oui, c'est lui...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

What do you need to practice Zentangle? Pen, pencil and paper, right? But, as Rick has been known to point out, you can also practice Zentangle with other materials that happen to be at hand including "with a stick in the sand at low tide". That idea stuck with me when I heard it during CZT training, and I knew at some point I would have to give it a try. So, with this Thursday 17th being Zentangle's tenth anniversary, this past weekend being the lowest tides for the month, and the weather forecast looking great, we took it to the sand. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was such a big canvas, a little intimidating, but 'Anything is possible, one stroke at a time'. We started with familiar, comfortable tangles, a variation of 'Flux' and then added some 'Printemps'.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pd1Fok8WI_c/U8RxvXBOnJI/AAAAAAAAAnw/hMgJXgUBnHI/s1600/IMG_8452.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pd1Fok8WI_c/U8RxvXBOnJI/AAAAAAAAAnw/hMgJXgUBnHI/s1600/IMG_8452.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Experimented with 'Indy-rella' and Elaine added some 'Sanibelle'. Looking for a grid and some contrast we added some 'Knightsbridge' which worked really well! Grew some 'Antidots' (one of my personal favorites!) and Maryann and Carl worked on some 'IX'<br />
<br />

<br />
What to do with the edges of the grids? Add 'Zingers'!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y8NEiWKD8Js/U8RxweycmUI/AAAAAAAAAoE/b1sWVVtkH68/s1600/IMG_8458.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y8NEiWKD8Js/U8RxweycmUI/AAAAAAAAAoE/b1sWVVtkH68/s1600/IMG_8458.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>

<br />
Getting to know our tools, we experimented with different ways to use them. This might have to be a new tangle? 'Rake Swirlz'???!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sr-tfq_ZwvM/U8RxwnXOleI/AAAAAAAAAoI/wHOf3iyGxFs/s1600/IMG_8459.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sr-tfq_ZwvM/U8RxwnXOleI/AAAAAAAAAoI/wHOf3iyGxFs/s1600/IMG_8459.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Taking photos at the end we discovered that the greatest impact came from photos taken facing towards the sun. From this position all the little shadows being cast by the raised sand lines created nice dark lines. Played around with angles and photo composition.</div>

<b><span style="font-size: large;">Classes at Kamala Art and Soul, Holliston</span></b><br />
This summer and fall I will be teaching a schedule of classes for Kate at Kamala Art & Soul in Holliston, MA staring with some Beginner (Zentangle Basics) classes and some themed classes starting in August with an Ocean Theme workshop and a Teach me a Tangle workshop. To check out the details <a href="http://zenventure.blogspot.com/p/class-information.html" target="_blank">click here</a> .<br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Community Tangle Time, Norfolk</b></span><br />
If you are free on Wednesday mornings (9:30-10:30am) feel free to join Community Tangle Time at Norfolk Public Library (if the weather is nice we will be out on the Town Common beside the library). All ages are welcome, including children as long as they are able to sit quietly with the group. Currently we are tangling our way through the alphabet with tangles beginning with a different letter each week. There is no fee for this informal meetup (but donations towards a copy of A Book of Zentangle' for the library are welcome), so just come and have fun with friends and take some time to breathe, draw, relax.<br />

Class themes are listed for Franklin Art Center location while the library classes are drop in classes so content varies according to the preferences of the group.'Like' <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheTravelingTangler" target="_blank">The Traveling Tangler on Facebook</a> and make suggestions for what tangles and techniques you would like to work on! Full details of classes are on the Class Schedule/Information page of this website. Hope to see you all in the New Year! Happy Holidays :)SarahDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05012505930066045305noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-980178999396353266.post-2905137100233582632013-09-02T16:26:00.000-07:002013-09-02T16:27:24.650-07:00Kids Beginner Workshop at Dover Library<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love that Zentangle is suitable for all ages. At Dover Public Library there was just one adult and an older teen in the class; mostly this was a kids class. They produced these amazing pieces of art to take home with them. Great job everyone!</div>

Ensemble means 'together', and together at the Dover Library this week lots of kids brought their parents and grandparents and gathered to 'Make Art on the Green'. It was a beautiful summer afternoon of facepainting and fingerpainting, a henna artist and sandy candy, and freshly popped popcorn... and... Zentangle! Many of the visitors to the event stopped by at the Zentangle table, chose an empty section on one of our nine tiles and filled it with circles ('Tipple') or lines ('Hollibaugh' or 'Static' or 'Diva Dance'), or their own patterns that they already enjoy making, or patterns that they created on the spot! Our youngest contributor was 3 years old, and one visitor was working with her non-dominant hand since her regular writing hand was injured. At the end of the day the last visitors helped me put the nine tiles back together in order, we added some shading on the outside and on the 'big circles' and we discovered that together we created a one of a kind piece of art work for the library - a community ensemble Zentangle design :) Looking forward to teaching a Beginners Workshop with the Dover community on Thursday...</div>

(although there is a Beginner Workshop at 1-3pm on the same day directly preceding this class for those who would like to make an afternoon of it and learn Zentangle first followed by a short break and then this workshop...) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So where do you keep all your tiles, where do you display your current favorites? And wouldn't it be nice to have all your personal favorite tangles all together in one place? For non-tangling friends what could you do with your own personally handmade book and frame? Photos, art, journaling?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Using high quality bookmaking materials and papers, this class will teach you bookmaking skills and techniques to make a portfolio frame (see below) and these beautiful little concertina books. Both sides of the concertina pages are usable, so for tangling friends you can put your tangles on one side...<span style="text-align: center;"> </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
...and store and display your tiles on the other side...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Thanks Jean for a wonderful class on Saturday! During our 'Touch of Color' workshop, guest CZT Jean Theurkauf introduced us to color, from choosing colors that work together, through adding color to tangles including colored highlights and shading, to making creative background washes to tangle on.The highlight for me was a technique to make tangles appear to hide behind a veil of color and I couldn't wait to try it out at home. I used a couple of ATC (Artist Trading Card) to put some swatches of color on.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R4sUs5BGxec/UW3lCX3YmlI/AAAAAAAAAfo/j9lZM-_4mP4/s1600/IMAG1127.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R4sUs5BGxec/UW3lCX3YmlI/AAAAAAAAAfo/j9lZM-_4mP4/s320/IMAG1127.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
See how the water colors don't mix and seem transparent and overlapping? Here's a second one with its wash of watercolor and dots, borders and strings... ready to tangle!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q9blm5LhnnI/UW3lCRsi4EI/AAAAAAAAAfs/6KQIgkAchHg/s1600/IMAG1123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Q9blm5LhnnI/UW3lCRsi4EI/AAAAAAAAAfs/6KQIgkAchHg/s320/IMAG1123.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here they are with tangles...the way the flux goes under the orange color in the bottom right is the effect I was shooting for.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BBOMalNrjV0/UW3lCrWJImI/AAAAAAAAAfw/HwqkFf-XW7Q/s1600/IMAG1140.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BBOMalNrjV0/UW3lCrWJImI/AAAAAAAAAfw/HwqkFf-XW7Q/s320/IMAG1140.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This photo of the blue and green one doesn't show the effect quite as well, but if you look hard you can see it. We will be exploring these organic tangles and how to mix and layer them in our next tangle time, "<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: center;">Growing a Zentangle Garden: Stirring Tangles Together", </span>this Sunday (April 21st) 4-5:30pm...<br />

Jean has a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Psychology from Brandeis University. After working for many years in software engineering, she has returned to her passions... art, fiber and teaching. Jean approaches the teaching of Zentangle as a way to help people unlock and expand their natural artistic talents. She also teaches knitting, crochet and weaving techniques, and encourages students not to follow a pattern, but to invent their own.<br />

Last week the challenge was to <a href="http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/2013/03/weekly-challenge-110.html" target="_blank">try something new</a>. And in a couple of weeks time CZT Jean Theurkauf, CZT will be visiting us at Franklin Art Center (Franklin MA) to present a <a href="http://zenventure.blogspot.com/p/class-information.html" target="_blank">'Touch of Color' workshop</a> to introduce the idea of adding a touch of color to their zentangle designs. So... This week I used Mooka as a tangle and tried out some watercolor pencils. It's not true zentangle, but rather an example of Zentangle Inspired Art otherwise known as a ZIA :)<br />

Decorated eggs can remind us that the season for new beginnings... and warmer weather... are on the way. If you are looking for a new way to decorate your eggs, come in to learn Zentangle this weekend at Franklin Art Center with a special 'Spring into Zentangle' Beginners workshop (1:30-3:30pm). And if you are already familiar with Zentangle, we will also be tangling eggs (and exploring the tangle 'Rick's Paradox') at Sunday's Tangle Time class (4-5:30pm). Participants of the Beginner's class are welcome to stay and join us for Tangle Time. Please <a href="http://zenventure.blogspot.com/p/contact-me.html" target="_blank">call or email me</a> to register for either (or both!) classes.<br /><br /><b>'Spring Into Zentangle' Beginners Workshop</b><br />Sunday March 24th, 2013<br />1:30-3:30pm<br />Franklin Art Center, 5 Main Street, Franklin MA<br /><br />This two hour workshop introduces you to the Zentangle method, explaining concepts, history and applications. You will learn several Zentangle patterns and be guided through the creation of your first Zentangle tiles. To make this class special for spring everyone will receive an (empty) eggshell to start tangling during class and to take home to complete. Participants may wish to consider staying for the Tangle Time class which follows this workshop (see below). Ages 8 and up. No experience necessary. Class fee: $35, materials included. Senior and parent/child discounts available.</span><br />

Not sure if we will be able to answer that question, but during this Tangle Time class we will explore 'Rick's Paradox', a beautiful tangle which, using just a single line repeated again and again, can produce beautiful, delicate, intricate patterns. Learn how to use it to fill spaces of any shape and size and how to create 'fan' and 'twisted column' effects. We will discuss the pros and cons of different pens/pencils for use on eggs, and eggs (not chickens!) and Zentangle tiles will be provided for participants to tangle. Tangle Time classes include 30mins of quiet tangle time to allow students to become absorbed in their work and experience the relaxation benefits of Zentangle. Students are welcome to bring their own tangling projects to work on during our quiet tangling time and may also bring iPods with head phones if they have preferred music they like to listen to during their quiet tangle time. Class fee:$15, Please bring your Zentangle kit; eggs and Zentangle tiles are included in the fee. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span><br />

The challenge involved parallel lines overlayed by bands. I had so much fun filling in the columns and bands, especially since I love to play with 3D effects, but was not sure what I wanted to do with the open spaces in between. Then I thought of my brown micron pen and remembered Maria's blog post about staining tiles with tea applied with a small paintbrush.I will definitely be working with all these ideas again!<br />
