Bijou etait a la plage!

Mid July some tanglers got together at a local beach and had some fun tangling in the sand. You can see the photos and read about how much fun we had here, but there was another piece of the story that I couldn't share online until today...

As we began our tangles with a little 'Flux' and 'Printemps' something appeared at the waters edge. At first it was hardly noticed by the passers by...

First one line...

Then two...

Who could it be,
Coming out of the sea,
To surprise you and me,
When there are tangles to see?

Oui, oui, c'est lui...
Notre nouvel ami!

Bijou!

Thanks Bijou for joining us and thanks Maria and Rick for permission to share his photo here.

Sand Zentangle

What do you need to practice Zentangle? Pen, pencil and paper, right? But, as Rick has been known to point out, you can also practice Zentangle with other materials that happen to be at hand including "with a stick in the sand at low tide". That idea stuck with me when I heard it during CZT training, and I knew at some point I would have to give it a try. So, with this Thursday 17th being Zentangle's tenth anniversary, this past weekend being the lowest tides for the month, and the weather forecast looking great, we took it to the sand.

It was such a big canvas, a little intimidating, but 'Anything is possible, one stroke at a time'. We started with familiar, comfortable tangles, a variation of 'Flux' and then added some 'Printemps'.

Experimented with 'Indy-rella' and Elaine added some 'Sanibelle'. Looking for a grid and some contrast we added some 'Knightsbridge' which worked really well! Grew some 'Antidots' (one of my personal favorites!) and Maryann and Carl worked on some 'IX'

What to do with the edges of the grids? Add 'Zingers'!

Getting to know our tools, we experimented with different ways to use them. This might have to be a new tangle? 'Rake Swirlz'???!

Taking photos at the end we discovered that the greatest impact came from photos taken facing towards the sun. From this position all the little shadows being cast by the raised sand lines created nice dark lines. Played around with angles and photo composition.

At the end of the day, when the adults downed tools, the children moved in to play among the tangles...

...and the seagulls arrived to see what they might find...

Thanks to fellow CZT, Elaine Huffman (to check out her website click here), for hosting us for the day. See you in the fall perhaps, or shall we plan for next summer?

New, new, new...

New Classes, New Location, New Tangles, New Products... and a beach trip THIS WEEK!!! The last six months have been busy with my regular work...but summer is here and it seems there is once again time to get out and about teaching and sharing Zentangle, and there is so much new to share...

Classes at Kamala Art and Soul, Holliston
This summer and fall I will be teaching a schedule of classes for Kate at Kamala Art & Soul in Holliston, MA staring with some Beginner (Zentangle Basics) classes and some themed classes starting in August with an Ocean Theme workshop and a Teach me a Tangle workshop. To check out the details click here .

Community Tangle Time, Norfolk
If you are free on Wednesday mornings (9:30-10:30am) feel free to join Community Tangle Time at Norfolk Public Library (if the weather is nice we will be out on the Town Common beside the library). All ages are welcome, including children as long as they are able to sit quietly with the group. Currently we are tangling our way through the alphabet with tangles beginning with a different letter each week. There is no fee for this informal meetup (but donations towards a copy of A Book of Zentangle' for the library are welcome), so just come and have fun with friends and take some time to breathe, draw, relax.

Field Trip to the Beach
****Sunday July 13th ****
This month is Zentangles tenth (Zenth?) birthday; to celebrate I am planning a field trip to a beach to create supersized tangles in the sand. For more details click here for my Class Info page or  Click here for my facebook page. All are welcome; bring friends and family and make a day of it!

New Tangles
'Like' my Facebook page to hear about new tangles. There is a new one from Rick and Maria called ING and a new one from one of my students called 'Ellie' and another that I am still putting together but will be ready to share soon :)

New Products
As well as regular square and round (Zendala) tiles and black as well as white, there are now new tan tiles (and brown pens to go with!) and soon there will be another size of tiles to play with. To stay in touch, join a class, follow me on facebook, email me to get on my email list and/or or check out the blogs and newsletters from Zentangle.

It's going to be a fun summer, wont you come play?
